A study has shown that a healthy plant based or vegetarian diet can significantly improve, or even cure, type 2 diabetes in patients. It does this by reducing levels of a key blood protein; the higher the level of this protein, the greater the risk of a patient developing further complications.
Diabetes is a common life-long condition and is the leading cause of blindness in people of working age and a major cause of lower limb amputation, kidney failure and stroke.
In Britain, there are currently three million people living with diabetes and possibly around 850,000 more who are unaware that they have the condition.
Study author, Dr Barnard, stated “Some wonder whether patients will stick to a plant-based diet. Unlike conventional ‘diabetes diets’, vegan diets do not require counting calories or limiting carbohydrates.”
